A Mom’s Heart on IEP Day: Finding Strength in Advocacy

The morning of an IEP meeting feels like stepping into a spotlight. Your heart pounds, your notes are clutched tightly, and you’re ready to fight for your child’s future. A recent YouTube Short captured this raw emotion perfectly—a mom, eyes full of determination, preparing to advocate for her autistic child’s needs. As a mom of two autistic kids and a parent coach, I’ve lived those moments. The anxiety is real, but so is the strength you find when you speak for your child.

IEP meetings can feel overwhelming. You’re not just a parent; you’re a negotiator, a storyteller, and a defender of your child’s potential. Every word matters, from explaining a meltdown’s triggers to celebrating a hard-won milestone. That Short reminded me of the power in those moments—when a mom’s love transforms into fierce advocacy.

Here are three ways to channel that strength on IEP day:

  1. Organize Your Thoughts: Before the meeting, jot down your child’s strengths, challenges, and specific needs. A clear list, like “loves sensory breaks, struggles with transitions,” keeps you focused when emotions run high.

  2. Breathe Through the Nerves: Anxiety can cloud your thoughts. Try a quick breathing exercise—inhale for four, hold for four, exhale for four—to stay calm and present.

  3. Know You’re Not Alone: Bring an advocate or friend, or connect with other moms afterward. Sharing your experience lightens the load and builds community.

You’re your child’s greatest champion. Each IEP meeting is a step toward their growth, and every moment you advocate builds a brighter path. Need support? Join me at Walk With Me Mom to connect with other moms and find practical strategies for this journey.
