Small Wins Matter

As an autism mom, I know how heavy the days can feel—endless appointments, meltdowns, and the constant push to advocate for your child. But amidst the challenges, there are moments of pure joy, those small wins that remind us why we keep going. I’ve learned that celebrating these victories, no matter how tiny, is key to moving from burnout to balance. Here’s how to embrace and honor those precious milestones in your autism parenting journey.

Every step forward counts. Whether your child says a new word, tried a new food, or made eye contact for a split second, these moments are breakthroughs. As a mom using Positive Behavior Supports, I’ve seen how recognizing progress—like my children using a visual schedule to transition smoothly—builds confidence for all of us. These wins remind us that growth isn’t always loud; sometimes, it’s a quiet, beautiful spark.

3 Ways to Celebrate Small Wins

  1. Pause and Reflect: When a win happens, take a moment to soak it in. When your child  complete a task independently, jot it down in a gratitude journal. Try this: Keep a small notebook or phone note to capture these moments. It’s a lifeline on tough days.

  2. Share the Joy: Tell someone who gets it. Connect with other autism moms or with a friend—to celebrate together. Their support makes every win sweeter.

  3. Reward Yourself and Your Child: Celebrate with something simple. After a successful sensory activity, enjoy a favorite snack. For you, it might be a quiet coffee break or a prayer of thanks. These acts reinforce positivity and remind you both how far you’ve come.

On this journey, every win is a testament to your love and resilience. As Philippians 4:13 reminds us, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” You’re not alone—your small wins are big in God’s eyes.
